Shoulder Pain - Frozen Shoulder

Shoulder pain is one of the most common muscular-
skeletal conditions in America. Recently, I’ve seen
many cases of patients with adhesive capsulitis. This
condition is also known as “frozen shoulder”
because it causes reduced range of motion with
pain.  In some Asian countries, this condition is also
called “fifty’s shoulder” because it is commonly seen
in patients in their fifties. In early stages, “frozen
shoulder” is accompanied by severe pain. Most
patients will experience a lot of pain even without any movement and will have
much discomfort when trying to sleep. It can significantly interrupt their daily living.

Some of the common signs and symptoms of “frozen shoulder” are:
•Severe, sharp, catching pain at the front of the shoulder.
      •Pain from mild activity.
•Pain when dressing and grooming such as reaching for your back pocket,
putting on a coat, hooking a bra, or brushing your hair.
•Pain down the upper, outer side of the arm and side of the neck.
•Night pain, especially when lying on the affected side.

The treatment for this condition in its early stages is very important since this
condition can lead to chronic discomfort of the shoulder joint if not treated properly.
Exercise therapy, cortisone injections, suprascapular nerve block and manipulation
are some of the possible treatment methods for “frozen shoulder.”

Based on my personal experience, I strongly believe that Active Release
Techniques (ART®) is one of the most effective and natural forms of treatment for
the “frozen shoulder” syndrome. ART® is a class of therapy that allows people to
obtain relief from pain and suffering associated with repetitive stress and soft
tissue injuries without the complications of oral medication, steroid therapy or
invasive surgery. A combined treatment protocol of ART® and chiropractic
adjustment has helped my patients to reduce pain and increase their range of
motion.
